Boadilla de Rioseco
Village
Boadilla de Rioseco is a village in Palencia of about ninety-five inhabitants in the heart of Tierra de Campos, whose medieval name, Bovatella in Rido seco, alludes to oxen. Its roots lie in the hamlet of Benavides, the former Royal Monastery of Santa María de Benavides, founded in 1169 by Countess Estefanía Ramírez and occupied from 1179 by Cistercian monks from Valverde de Campos; it developed around 1254 with the favour of the royal steward Rodrigo González Girón, although its monastic church no longer exists. The village preserves two 17th-century Baroque churches, San Salvador -from 1647, the work of the stonemason Andrés de Buega- and Santa María, as well as the hermitage of the Virgen del Amparo, its patron saint, and a bridge over the river Sequillo.
