Frechilla
Village
Frechilla is a town of 138 inhabitants in the Palencia Tierra de Campos, which was the seat of a judicial district between 1833 and 1967 and, in medieval times, the head of the district under the lordship of the Duke of Braganza and Marquis of Frechilla. It kept its walls until 1836, of which the names of its former gates remain. Its church of Santa María, designed in 1620 by Francisco de Ruaves after burning down in 1533, boasts a slender 50-metre tower and holds one of the best organs in Castile and León, a Baroque main altarpiece and a 16th-century Gothic calvary; it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1994. Nearby stands the hermitage of San Miguel, patron of the town, beside a well from 1399. The village celebrates La Traída on 29 April and preserves fine examples of traditional dovecotes.
