Autillo de Campos
Village
Autillo de Campos is a village in the Palencia Tierra de Campos region, on marshy ground on the left bank of the Valdeginate river. In the 13th century it was a lordship town of Gonzalo Ruiz Girón, steward of Alfonso VIII and defender of Queen Berenguela against the attacks of Álvar Núñez de Lara; King Henry I took refuge here, and here, on 14 June 1217, Ferdinand III was proclaimed king of Castile, a step prior to his coronation in Valladolid. With the inheritance of the kingdom of León on his father's death in 1230, this same king would unify both crowns. An inscription that recorded the event, in the now-vanished hermitage of the Castillo, was lost in the 19th century. The village, with about 125 inhabitants, preserves the church of Santa Eufemia and two classicist bridges from 1781.
