Abarca de Campos
Village
A hamlet of the Tierra de Campos, in the province of Palencia, with fewer than forty inhabitants, compared with 240 in the 19th century, when the 1842 census counted 265 residents; its first written mention appears in a document of King Ordoño II from the year 916. It belonged in the 12th century to the Order of Calatrava and later passed through the hands of Queen Mencía of Portugal, the Alburquerque family, the Osorio family and, in the 18th century, the Abrantes family. Its town centre, of traditional adobe architecture, preserves the Palacio de los Osorio, built between 1580 and 1620, and a Mudéjar church from the second half of the 17th century, with a 15th-century tower and a 1778 Iberian organ by Tadeo Ortega; its carillon tower, with sixteen bells, is the largest in Castile and León. The Canal de Castilla, navigable by boat, has here its first lock of the Campos branch.
