Cisneros
Village
Cisneros is a town in Tierra de Campos, in the province of Palencia, whose name may come from the Latin cinisa, ash, after a resettlement on the ashes of a fire; it already appears documented in 946, as Cinisarios, in texts of the monastery of Sahagún. It has been claimed that Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, archbishop of Toledo, was born here, although he was actually born in Torrelaguna; his grandfather, Toribio Jiménez, did however live in the town. With about 425 inhabitants, it preserves the church of San Facundo y San Primitivo, built of brick with three naves in the 16th century, with notable Mudéjar coffered ceilings, and the old church of San Pedro, today a parish museum, with an altarpiece by Francisco Giralte. In September the paloteo of the Virgen del Castillo is danced with the figure of the Chiborra.
