Carrión de los Condes
Village
Carrión de los Condes is a town of about 2,000 inhabitants situated in the north of the Palencia Tierra de Campos, on the banks of the river Carrión, and a major waypoint of the Camino Francés, whose route crosses its main streets from east to west; at Carrión it also connects with the Camino de Santiago del Norte via the Ruta del Besaya. The upper part of the town, where today stands the church of Nuestra Señora de Belén, occupies the site of the ancient Lacóbriga, a Vaccaean city later Romanised and a stop on the Roman road between Bordeaux and Astorga. Also linked to the Cantar de mio Cid, it preserves the plateresque cloister of San Zoilo and the Romanesque churches of Santiago, with its Pantocrator, and Santa María del Camino.
