Villalcázar de Sirga
Village
Villalcázar de Sirga is a village of about 160 inhabitants in the province of Palencia, right on the French Way, which veered slightly to pass close to its church of Santa María la Blanca, famous in the Middle Ages for its miracles. It was a commandery of the Order of the Temple, which between the 12th and 14th centuries built this fortified temple, of which remains of battlements on the north side and a sturdy projecting turret are still preserved. Alfonso X the Wise recorded twelve of its miracles in the Cantigas, and inside lies the infante don Felipe. The very name of the village, documented since 1069 as Villasirga, alludes to the towpath that ran alongside the Ucieza river and that the first pilgrims, diverted from the Roman road, already used.
