Arconada
Village
Arconada is a hamlet of about forty-five inhabitants in the Palencia comarca of Tierra de Campos, between Villalcázar de Sirga and Santillana de Campos, at 828 metres of altitude, compared with 281 inhabitants in 1842. It was already inhabited in Roman times, as shown by the preserved Roman fountain and basins and the ancient tools found in its farmland. Located on a variant of the Camino Francés, the Roman road Aquitania, it was for centuries a route for pilgrims toward Santiago; to attend to them, Count Gómez Díaz de Carrión founded a charitable hospital here in 1042, whose founding inscription is preserved in the church of Santa María. The village also had a priory, and Alfonso X dedicated a cantiga to its Virgin of Arconada.
