Villamuera de la Cueza
Village
Villamuera de la Cueza is a hamlet in Tierra de Campos, in the province of Palencia, with around thirty-six inhabitants, at 807 metres of altitude and crossed by a stretch of the Leonese Royal Drove Road. Its name comes from the Latin villa, farm or estate, and from the arabized term Muria or Maura, a Mozarabic settler brought by Ferdinand I in the 11th century; Cueza is a later addition, from the 19th century, referring to a shallow valley. Of the old church of Santa María only the round-arched doorway survives, now built into the church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves. The village also preserves the remains of an old pósito, or communal granary. Nearby stood the now depopulated settlement of Villovildo, which belonged to the Order of San Juan.
