Villacarralón
Village
Villacarralón is a hamlet in the Tierra de Campos of Valladolid, with archaeological remains from the early Iron Age and from Roman times nearby. Facing the church stands the heraldic house of the Escobares, with two coats of arms of this lineage, and an old hospital and the ruined tower of the former church of San Pedro are preserved. Its present-day church, dedicated to Santa María de la Asunción, was begun in 1779 to designs by the architect Manuel Martín Rodríguez: neoclassical in style and built of brick, it holds a Baroque altarpiece from the mid-18th century with sculptures of San Antonio de Padua and San Roque, and a rococo high altarpiece from the monastery of Sahagún, with 16th-century reliquary busts of Santa Sofía, Santa Catalina and San Pelayo. It now has 71 inhabitants.
