Fontihoyuelo
Village
Fontihoyuelo is a municipality in the Tierra de Campos comarca, in the north of the province of Valladolid, crossed by the Way of St. James from Madrid. Its name comes from the Leonese Fonte Foyolo, "spring in the hollow," which aptly describes the dip where it sits; an archaic form of the toponym survives in the title of Marquis of Fuentehoyuelo. Its origin goes back to the 11th century, when Ferdinand I of León granted the place, together with Gordaliza de la Loma, to the brothers Gutier and Munio Alfonso, counts of Grajal. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the merindad of Carrión and was a manorial estate of the Cabeza de Vaca family. Emigration in the 1960s and 1970s reduced it from 360 residents in 1910 to 29 today; it preserves the church of Salvador, raised under the supervision of Juan Ribero de Rada.
