Becerril de Campos
Village
Becerril de Campos is a town in the province of Palencia, in the Tierra de Campos comarca, 15 kilometres northwest of the capital; its population, of about 740 inhabitants, came close to 3,000 in the 19th century, when it had six parishes, two hermitages and a public granary. There was human settlement since the Bronze Age and Vaccaean occupation in the Iron Age; after Romanisation, 2nd-century Roman busts have been found in its municipal area, now in the Provincial Archaeological Museum. Depopulated after the arrival of the Arabs, it was resettled by Alfonso III in the 9th century and belonged for centuries to the manorial estate of the House of Lara. Its church of Santa María la Antigua holds works by Pedro Berruguete, and that of San Pedro became in 2015 a space devoted to astronomy.
