Astudillo
Village
Astudillo is a town of about 1,040 inhabitants situated between the comarcas of El Cerrato and Tierra de Campos, beside the river Pisuerga and close to the border with the province of Burgos, 28 kilometres from Palencia. The landscape, mostly limestone, rises into páramos reaching 900 metres, such as El Pau or Valdesanchín, with a dry and extreme climate —up to 36 degrees in summer and 12 below zero in winter— and Mediterranean holm-oak woodland. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1995, it preserves walls, a colonnaded square and more than two kilometres of underground galleries; in the 14th century, María de Padilla founded the monastery of Santa Clara here.
