Santoyo
Village
Santoyo is a village of around 190 inhabitants in the Tierra de Campos comarca, in the province of Palencia, 35 kilometres north of the capital, whose municipal area includes the hamlet of Santiago del Val. In the páramo de Sarnallano a Vaccean hillfort is preserved, and in the Roman villa of Las Quintanas an oven, a hypocaust and sigillata ware have been found. After the fall of the Visigothic Kingdom the territory remained abandoned until its resettlement in the late 10th century, when Santoyo was founded, in the time of count Garci Fernández, in September 988; it was a walled town in the 11th century, of which few remains survive today. Its name derives from Sanctus Ioannes, the village's patron saint. Its church combines a Romanesque tower, a Gothic transept, a Plateresque portico and a Renaissance altarpiece.
