Boadilla del Camino
Village
Boadilla del Camino is a village in the province of Palencia where three singularities coincide: the Tierra de Campos, at whose eastern edge it lies, with its fields of grain; the Camino de Santiago, which since the 10th century brought pilgrims here along the French route; and the Canal de Castilla, an Enlightenment work of the late 18th century. Its greatest heyday was the 15th and 16th centuries, when the Gothic rollo, decorated with animal and Jacobean motifs, the present-day church and the pilgrims' hospital were erected; from that period also comes Antonio de Rojas, a native of Boadilla, who went on to become the first patriarch of the Indies under Charles I. It now lives on agriculture and sheep farming, and has a pilgrims' hostel open almost all year round. It has about 110 inhabitants.
