Melgar de Yuso
Village
Melgar de Yuso is a market town in Tierra de Campos, in the province of Palencia, with around 265 inhabitants, beside the Pisuerga, founded in 988 by Fernán Mentález, a vassal of Fernán González, with the same charters as Melgar de Fernamental. Formerly called “of the Knights” because of its ties to the Order of Santiago and its closeness to the Camino, it was the seat of a county whose title was granted by Henry IV of Castile to the admiral Fadrique Enríquez de Mendoza. It had a renowned pilgrims' hospital, the Hospital Regional de Romeros, to which miraculous cures were attributed, and it preserves the façade of its old stronghold, the Palacio de Ramírez, now a private home. Its hermitage of la Vega holds a polychrome Romanesque carving of the Virgin.
