Vertavillo
Village
Vertavillo is a town in the province of Palencia, in the district of Cerrato, with about 160 inhabitants, set on a hill at 810 metres above sea level. The site holds prehistoric remains dating back to the third millennium BC and was home, between the 5th and 1st centuries BC, to a large Vaccaean settlement; it was resettled in the late 9th century by Alfonso III and walled in the 10th century. In 1532 Charles V granted it the title of a town with its own jurisdiction, freeing it from Baltanás, an event celebrated with the erection of the 16th-century pillory it displays today. Declared, as a whole, a monumento histórico-artístico (a category of protected heritage monument in Spain) in 1960, it preserves its medieval walled precinct and the parish church of San Miguel.
