What to see and do in Cevico de la Torre

Cevico de la Torre
Village
Cevico de la Torre is a town in the province of Palencia, in the Cerrato comarca, with about 465 inhabitants, situated at 764 metres of altitude. The site preserves Celtiberian and Roman remains — coins of Julius Caesar, Tiberius and Caligula — and remained populated in Visigothic and Mozarabic times; at the end of the 9th century it was resettled by the troops of Alfonso III the Great, who made it the head of a medieval alfoz. The old tower that gives the town its name stood on the mound where the Herrerian church of San Martín now stands; Alfonso X ordered it torn down in 1255 and forbade the building of new towers without his authorisation. At the Corpus Christi festivities, the young men dance to the sound of the dulzaina on the ninety-two-step staircase that leads up to the church.

Alfonso X orders the demolition of the Cevico tower
Historical milestone
In 1255 Alfonso X ordered the destruction of the fortified tower that gave the village its name and forbade the building of castles without royal licence; beneath the present houses remains of the fourteenth-century medieval fortified house still show.
The Corpus Christi Dancers of Cevico
Activity
On Corpus Christi day a group of dancers dances before the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of the village, a tradition that adds to the procession of Las Letanías at Ascension and the November feast of San Martín.
