Villaconancio
Village
Villaconancio is a hamlet in the El Cerrato comarca, at the southeastern tip of the province of Palencia, in a valley watered by the Maderón stream, at the foot of the 915-metre Mazorra mountain; it has fewer than fifty inhabitants, compared with the 698 residents it recorded in the mid-19th century. Its name, Villa de Conancio, refers to a figure from Hispano-Gothic onomastics — perhaps the Palencia bishop Conancio of the year 639 — and could go back to Visigothic times, although the place name is only documented from the 9th–10th centuries. The town was protected by a wall with at least two crenellated gates, and in the 11th century Ferdinand I donated the place to the Monastery of Arlanza. Its 12th-century Romanesque church of San Julián preserves a double apse and its chancel arch, and was rebuilt in 1902.
