Alba de Cerrato
Village
Alba de Cerrato is a village in the province of Palencia with about eighty inhabitants, documented since the 11th and 12th centuries, when Sancho the Great donated the town to the Bishop of Palencia around 1035, a donation that Ferdinand I would confirm in 1507. In the 13th century its first church was raised, in Romanesque-Mudéjar style, of which only the apse is preserved after the building's reconstruction in the 17th century; today it is the parish church of Santa María del Cortijo. During the reign of Charles V it received the title of town with its own jurisdiction, and to commemorate this the justice pillory was erected, in Gothic style and from the 16th century, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1960. Like the rest of the Castilian countryside, it suffered intense depopulation during the 20th century.
