Castrillo de Onielo
Village
Castrillo de Onielo is a village of about ninety inhabitants in the province of Palencia, in the Cerrato comarca, which in 1930 reached 879. Its old name, Castrillo de la Peña, comes from the Latin castrum, and the town was fortified in Celtiberian and Roman times, of which the arched gate giving access to the village still remains. In the Middle Ages it was reconquered by Alfonso III the Great and belonged to the lordship of Doña Eilo, first wife of Count Ansúrez, founder of Valladolid. It preserves the Romanesque church of Nuestra Señora de la Paz, from the 12th century, with portals decorated with animals, and a 16th-century jurisdictional pillory.
