Valle de Cerrato
Village
Valle de Cerrato is a village of about seventy-five inhabitants at 815 metres above sea level, in the district of El Cerrato (Palencia), surrounded by hills and set on the banks of the Rabanillo stream; in the 19th century it had as many as 469 inhabitants. It was walled from the 9th century, and although the walls held out until the 14th century, typical underground cellars are now dug into the foundations of the wall. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, of Romanesque plan with early Gothic details, dates from the early 13th century, although much of the current building results from an 18th-century remodelling; of the original construction only the doorway survives, with five archivolts and historiated capitals.
