Cevico Navero
Village
Cevico Navero is a village of about 175 inhabitants in the province of Palencia, in the El Cerrato comarca, situated at the foot of the Cuesta de la Horca hill, where a Bronze Age hillfort has been located that reveals settlement a thousand years before the Roman conquest. Its name comes from the pre-Roman ce-vico, walled settlement, and naba, plain between mountains. It was a walled town in the Middle Ages, after the resettlement undertaken in the 9th century by Alfonso III the Great, and two gates of its wall are preserved. The town reached 999 inhabitants in 1900 and preserves a Romanesque church, the ruins of the monastery of San Pelayo and cave dwellings dug into the hillside, some inhabited until the 1960s.
