What to see and do in Tariego de Cerrato

Tariego de Cerrato
Village
Tariego de Cerrato is a town in the Palencia Cerrato, on the slope of a hill above the left bank of the Pisuerga, fourteen kilometres from the capital, with about 505 inhabitants. There was a Celtiberian settlement that resisted Roman occupation before becoming Romanised, and after the reconquest at the end of the 9th century the place was resettled; its castle, already documented in 917, supported Dueñas in controlling the Pisuerga valley. In 1217, when the young King Henry I of Castile died in Palencia, his guardian hid the body in this castle while manoeuvring for the throne, until Berengaria of Castile, the king's sister, abdicated in favour of her son Ferdinand III. The fortress later passed through several lordships, among them the counts of Buendía and, in the 18th century, the dukes of Medinaceli.
