Cubillas de Cerrato
Village
Cubillas de Cerrato is a hamlet in the district of El Cerrato, in the province of Palencia, bordering Valladolid, with about sixty inhabitants at 729 metres, down from the 757 it had in 1900, reached from Valoria la Buena, 6 km away. Its church of Santa María la Mayor was built in the 12th century in Romanesque style, incorporated Mudejar features in the 13th and was remodelled in Gothic style in the 14th, with a final renovation in the 17th; it holds a Renaissance main altarpiece from the late 16th century with carvings of San Bartolomé and a Gothic-Hispano-Flemish Virgin and Child from the second half of the 15th, as well as Baroque altarpieces and sculptures from the 16th and 17th centuries. The village once had five hermitages, of which only that of the Cristo de la Guía survives, and it celebrates its main festivals in honour of San Bartolomé on August 24.
