Hontoria de Cerrato
Village
Hontoria de Cerrato is a hamlet of El Cerrato, in the province of Palencia, with about a hundred inhabitants, whose name comes from the Latin Fons Aurea, "golden spring", around which a Roman settlement arose; in 1975, next to the ruins of the former convent of Santa Coloma, the remains of a Roman villa were found, with pottery, tiles and stones. It preserves the church of Santa Columba, which historians consider possibly of Mozarabic origin because of its link to Santa Coloma, a 10th-century saint from Cordoba, and which was given to Abad Luminoso of the monastery of San Isidro de Dueñas. The parish of San Miguel Arcángel preserves Romanesque remains from the 12th century, together with Gothic and Baroque elements added later.
