Castrillo de la Reina
Village
Castrillo de la Reina is a municipality of 159 inhabitants in the Sierra de la Demanda, already close to the border with the province of Soria, which in the mid-19th century had as many as 525. It preserves several early medieval necropolises — Covacha de las Monjas, Hornillos, Saelices, El Villar and Aguamediano — and the semi-rupestrian hermitage of Santiuste, next to another necropolis at the Alto de la Muela, crowned by the hermitage of Santa Ana, which also serves as a viewpoint; the parish church of San Esteban and a jurisdictional pillory rebuilt in 1999 complete its heritage. In its territory fossil remains, dinosaur footprints and fossilised trees have also been found. Since 1992 the whole village has performed every August a play about the Siete Infantes de Lara based on the text by Lope de Vega.
