Carazo
Village
Carazo is a Burgos hamlet of 42 inhabitants, in the Sierra de la Demanda, whose municipal area, of 2,401 hectares, is entirely included in the Sabinares del Arlanza Special Protection Area, a refuge for griffon vultures and Egyptian vultures; through it runs the Yecla gorge, with walls over 100 metres high and pools that can be visited via walkways. On Mount Soncarazo remains of Celtic hillforts are preserved, and in Roman times roads linking Clunia with León passed nearby. In the Middle Ages it was dominated by the castle of San Carlos, of Hispano-Muslim origin and taken by the Christians in the 10th century, important in the struggles between Castile and Navarre and mentioned in the anonymous 13th-century poem of Fernán González; in the 19th-century Carlist Wars it was known as the fort of San Carlos.
