Villanueva de Carazo
Village
Villanueva de Carazo is a hamlet in the Burgos comarca of the Sierra de la Demanda, situated at 996 meters of altitude and crossed by the Gran Recorrido GR-82 long-distance trail. Here stood the monastery of San Bartolomé, donated by Abbot Severo and his mother Paterna to the abbey of Silos and its Abbot Velasco, and nearby a clash of the First Carlist War was fought, won by the Isabelines. In the mid-19th century it had 180 inhabitants, a figure now reduced to 24. Julio Caro Baroja, in his book Del viejo folklore castellano, recorded the village's celebration of the festivity of the Christmas reign. It lives from agriculture, livestock farming and rural tourism.
