What to see and do in Hacinas

Hacinas
Village
Hacinas is a municipality in the Sierra de la Demanda, in the province of Burgos, with 145 inhabitants, four kilometres from Salas de los Infantes and thirteen from the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos. At the highest point of the village stand the ruins of a castle from the late 9th century, which played a strategic role in the conflicts between the county of Castile and the kingdom of Navarre. Its tourist draw is its fossil trees, found buried since 1840: the first was moved to the village in 1976 and three are now on display, while another seven remain underground; since 2009 the Fossil Tree Visitor Centre has recreated the environment of 120 million years ago. It is rounded out by a carnival with characters such as the Tarasca and the Comarrajos.

Nature
The first remains appeared around 1840 buried among fluvial materials; the first was moved to the village in 1976 and today three petrified trunks of a forest of some hundred and twenty million years ago can be seen.
El Reinado and its medieval verses
Curiosity
At Christmas the village performs El Reinado, a celebration of medieval root that has preserved in its text verses that scholars had given up for lost, turning this mountain hamlet into an involuntary oral archive.

Monument
Above the built fabric remain the traces of a fortress raised probably at the end of the ninth century, a piece of the line that Castile kept active during its disputes with Navarre over the control of these sierras.
