What to see and do in Jaramillo Quemado

Jaramillo Quemado
Village
Jaramillo Quemado is a municipality in the province of Burgos, in the comarca of the Demanda, with only twelve inhabitants: one of the smallest in Spain. It was formerly called Jaramillo de los Caballeros, after the hidalgos who lived there, as its houses bearing coats of arms attest. The village is divided into the districts of Gallejones, Cascajo and La Calle, which converge on the square where the jurisdictional pillory stands, in the shadow of the Mencilla peak. It preserves its church of San Martín de Tours, with a 12th-century Romanesque tower and three 15th-century Gothic naves with stone vaults. In its dehesa grows the Oak of the Verruga, up to 800 years old and 9 metres in girth, and nearby the hermitage of Valpeñoso, which is climbed in pilgrimage on the first Sunday of July.
