Barbadillo del Mercado
Village
Barbadillo del Mercado is a town in the comarca of Sierra de la Demanda, in the province of Burgos, situated at 951 metres above sea level in the valley of the Pedroso river, a tributary of the Arlanza; part of its territory is protected as the Sabinares del Arlanza Special Protection Area for birds, and in 2004 the tallest dinosaur in Europe, Europatitan Eastwoodi, was found here. Its name harks back to Barba Tello, son of the captain of Alfonso III who received the Pedroso valley for his services, while “del Mercado” would recall the passing of the medieval hermit Sancho Mercatero. It preserves in the plaza Mayor a jurisdictional pillory, the Roman-era Canto bridge, houses bearing coats of arms and the Acuña palace, and it keeps up the Reinado dance and the singing of the marzas. It has 134 inhabitants.
