Cascajares de la Sierra
Village
Cascajares de la Sierra is a hamlet in the Burgos comarca of the Sierra de la Demanda, of the old alfoz of Lara. The first documents that mention it, from 1052, name it as an area where gravel abounded, and local tradition places here a battle between Moors and Christians that the latter won, recalled in the verse: “the rout of Cascajares is clear proof that a few people with God are worth more than thousands without God.” It had a railway station, between 1927 and 1985, on the Santander-Mediterranean line. Its parish church preserves the Romanesque apse, and the festivities are Saint Anthony of Padua, on 13 June, and the Nativity of Our Lady, on 8 September. It has 25 inhabitants.
