Villaespasa
Village
Villaespasa is a hamlet in the sierra de la Demanda, in the province of Burgos, with 21 inhabitants, which also includes the settlement of Rupelo; in the mid-19th century it had as many as 160 inhabitants. The monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza granted it a fuero on 15 June 1089. It preserves the parish church of Santa Eulalia, with a basilica-plan nave and ashlar walls, and the hermitage of Valpeñoso, the destination of a pilgrimage on the first Sunday of July; in the old town another ruined hermitage also stands, believed to have been built in the 17th century or early 18th. On 22 August it celebrates the feast of Santa Eulalia.
