Hortigüela
Village
Hortigüela is a municipality of 103 inhabitants in the comarca of Sierra de la Demanda, in the province of Burgos, situated in the valley of the Arlanza river, next to the sierra de las Mamblas. In its territory, on the road to Covarrubias along the BU-905, stands the monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza, founded in the year 912, from which come the earliest written references to the village, from the 11th century onward. On that same road Sergio Leone filmed in 1966 the bridge battle scene from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, with Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach. A good part of its territory is protected as the Sabinares del Arlanza Special Protection Area, a refuge for griffon vultures and Egyptian vultures. Its patronal festivities, in honour of the Virgin and Saint Roch, are held on 15 and 16 August.
