Pinilla de los Moros
Village
Pinilla de los Moros is a hamlet in the comarca of the Sierra de la Demanda, in the province of Burgos, within the judicial district of Salas de los Infantes. It has 30 inhabitants and the settlement of Piedrahíta de Muñó as a dependency. Its name alludes to a vertical rock known as El Risco Moro, and local tradition places here, on a hill above the Pedroso river now called El Almazorre, one of the camps of the warlord Almanzor during his campaign against San Millán de la Cogolla; legend adds that its ancient inhabitants buried there a bull's hide of gold. Between the 8th and 14th centuries these lands of Lara were resettled, grouped into behetrías. Its church of San Román holds a Romanesque baptismal font and late Gothic reliefs attributed to Gil de Siloé or to an accomplished pupil of his.
