What to see and do in Coruña del Conde

Coruña del Conde
Village
Coruña del Conde is a municipality of 95 inhabitants in the valley of the Arandilla river, Ribera del Duero comarca, province of Burgos, three kilometres from the ruins of Roman Clunia. The area, settled by Celtiberian Arevaci, became after the Roman conquest Colonia Clunia Sulpicia, one of the key cities in the Romanisation of northern Spain. Razed by the Arabs in 712, it remained deserted until in 912 count Gonzalo Fernández de Burgos, on the orders of King García I of León, resettled the area and founded a new fortress on the site of the present village. Diego Marín Aguilera, who in 1793 attempted to fly with a machine of his own invention, was born here, and every April its residents climb in pilgrimage to the Virgin of Castro.
The flight of Diego Marín Aguilera
Historical milestone
On the night of 15 May 1793, the shepherd and inventor Diego Marín Aguilera launched himself from the highest crag of the castle of Coruña del Conde with a machine of feathers and iron rods that had taken him six years to build, after studying the flight of eagles above the battlemented tower. He reached a height of five to six varas and covered about 360 metres towards Burgo de Osma before landing on the other side of the river, when one of the bolts on the wings broke. The next morning his neighbours, believing him mad, burned the contraption. Marín, born and died in Coruña del Conde (1757-1800), had earlier devised other inventions, such as one for the mill on the Arandilla. In 1993, on the bicentenary, the Ejército del Aire (Spanish Air Force) donated a plane to the municipality in his memory.
The hermitage of the Santo Cristo and the stones of Clunia
Monument
With a quadrangular apse and a Visigothic air, the hermitage was built reusing ashlars, reliefs and architectural pieces torn from the ruins of the neighbouring Roman city of Clunia.
