Villalbilla de Gumiel
Village
Villalbilla de Gumiel is a hamlet of 73 inhabitants in the comarca of La Ribera, province of Burgos, beside the río Gromejón, eighteen kilometres from Aranda de Duero and near Gumiel de Izán, Tubilla del Lago and Santa María del Mercadillo. At the entrance to the village stands the ermita de la Pilarica, and its church, in Romanesque style, preserves a small but singular portal with carvings on either side depicting an 11th-century Christian knight and a feathered serpent. The patronal festival of Santiago is celebrated on 25 July, and over the December Constitution long weekend the tradition of the pig slaughter is revived, with the making of bacon, chorizo and black pudding.
