What to see and do in Villanueva de Gumiel

Villanueva de Gumiel
Village
Villanueva de Gumiel is a municipality of 281 inhabitants belonging to the Mancomunidad de La Yecla. Its 19th-century parish church holds a Renaissance altarpiece by the master of Duruelo with seven panels on the life and martyrdom of San Mamés, to whom the parish is dedicated, and a predella with San Juan Bautista, San Pedro, San Pablo and San Juan Evangelista; it was restored in 2024 thanks to a popular crowdfunding campaign through Hispania Nostra. The village celebrates the Marzas on the last night of February and, on 29 April, San Pedro de Verona, patron of the inquisitors, with a night procession to the ermita. It is the birthplace of the bolillos de Villanueva, a men's skittles game native to the town.
