Pinilla Trasmonte
Village
A municipality in the Ribera del Duero comarca, in Burgos, situated in the Esgueva valley; it has 152 inhabitants. On the hill of the Alto de San Pedro the last vestiges of a 6th-century BC Celtiberian settlement are preserved, belonging to the Arevaci tribe and linked by some researchers to the itinerant mint of Sekobirikes, whose silver coins show a horse with a lance-armed rider; a model of the settlement is displayed at the Archaeological Museum of Burgos. Branches of the Cañada Real Soriana drovers' road once crossed the territory toward Aranda. The village preserves two 16th-century bridges, the Bajero and the Encimero, and on the day of San Laureano its residents dance to the saint while walking backward.
