Gumiel de Izán
Village
Gumiel de Izán is a town of 587 inhabitants in the Ribera del Duero, Burgos, declared a historic site (conjunto histórico) in 2004; it sits on a rise between the valleys of the Gromejón and the Puentevilla, at 851 metres, amid a landscape of high moorland, cereal and vineyard countryside and a fertile vega, watered by the Gromejón, a tributary of the Duero that rises in Caleruega. Along its banks flour mills were built, among them that of San Pedro, which supplied the village with electricity during the first half of the 20th century. Its name combines Gumiel, of Mozarabic origin, with Izán, a medieval Basque name of the Navarrese resettlers. It preserves the Gothic church of Santa María, a listed monument since 1962, whose Baroque staircase and façade have been compared to the Treasury at Petra, and, four kilometres away, the Romanesque ermita of the Cristo de Reveche.
