Tórtoles de Esgueva
Village
Tórtoles de Esgueva is a municipality of 362 inhabitants in the Ribera del Duero comarca, in the province of Burgos, situated in the Esgueva valley, upstream, with Villovela de Esgueva as a dependent hamlet. For centuries it was under the jurisdiction of the abbess of its monastery of Santa María la Real, founded in the 12th century beside abundant springs that watered its orchards; after the nuns' move to Aranda, the complex lost its religious use and, restored in 2008, today houses a guesthouse, a residence and an artisan cheese dairy. It also preserves the parish church of Saint Stephen Protomartyr, from the late Middle Ages, attached to a former defensive tower turned bell tower, with three ribbed-vault naves and a Romanesque baptismal font.
