Anguix
Village
Anguix is a town of 166 inhabitants in the Ribera del Duero, Burgos, which already appeared among the 33 hamlets of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Roa when it was created in 1143, under the charter (fuero) of Sepúlveda granted by Alfonso VII. As a manorial town it belonged to the duke of Siruela, who appointed its mayor, until the fall of the Old Regime. It was the birthplace of the botanist and apothecary Antonio de la Cal y Bracho, founder of the botanical garden of Puebla. Its church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora, from the 18th century, with Baroque altars, was built at such high cost that it mortgaged the town's assets and forced residents to contribute labour and donations. On the Torrejón hill, dotted with wine cellars, stands the ermita of San Juan, from 1737.
