Olmedillo de Roa
Village
Olmedillo de Roa is an agricultural municipality in the Ribera del Duero comarca, in the province of Burgos, where fields of grain and vineyards of Tinta del País grapes, the same variety as Tempranillo, alternate up to the pine woods crowning the hilltops known as cotarros; the town is home to the Pagos del Rey winery, the largest producer in the entire denomination of origin. With 188 inhabitants, it preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, built between the 16th and 17th centuries by the stonemason Juan de Navaceda: it has three naves, a chancel with Gothic windows and a star-ribbed vault in the false transept, and holds a retable dedicated to the Virgen de Basardilla, whose image comes from the Baroque hermitage raised on a hill near the village.
