San Martín de Rubiales
Village
San Martín de Rubiales is a municipality of 137 inhabitants situated where the Duero leaves Burgos lands, 8 km from Roa and 15 from Peñafiel. In 1007 a battle was fought on Socastillo hill, next to the village, in which the troops of Almanzor's son razed the castle and massacred its inhabitants. The present-day municipality arose from the merger of three nearby settlements, Rubiales, Quintanilla and San Martín; beside the Rubiales bridge a pilgrims' hospital was built around 1200, which Alfonso VIII handed over to the monastery of Santa María la Real de Tórtoles de Esgueva, and which continued operating at least until 1650. Its church holds a Dolorosa from the imagery school of Medina de Rioseco.
