Valdezate
Village
Valdezate is a municipality in Burgos of 115 inhabitants, in the Ribera del Duero comarca, where the páramo of Corcos descends toward the valley; the village stands at 837 metres. It belonged to the former Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Haza or Aza, linked from its earliest times to the House of Lara and, later, to that of Avellaneda and to the counts of Miranda. On 10 September 1674 the regent queen Mariana of Austria signed, in the name of Charles II, the privilege of exemption for Valdezate, by which the hamlet became a town and became independent of the entailed estate of the counts of Miranda after paying 696,000 maravedís; the document is kept in the municipal archive. It also preserves a network of underground wine cellars where many families still produce wine by traditional methods.
