Nava de Roa
Village
Nava de Roa is a municipality of 202 inhabitants whose name, of pre-Roman origin, denotes the flat land ringed by hills that it occupies. Arising in the medieval repopulation of the 10th and 11th centuries, it lived through its greatest splendour between the 16th and 18th centuries as a crossroads of the Valladolid–Soria and Segovia–Zaragoza routes. In 1836 it was almost entirely razed by the Carlist troops of General Miguel Gómez Damas, so that only three houses survived, two of which are still preserved; afterwards, phylloxera finished off its vineyards. The guerrilla fighter Juan Martín El Empecinado was imprisoned here in 1823, before being executed in Roa. Its church of San Antolín holds an altarpiece of 1598 by Pedro Cicarte and a large Gothic Christ; its wines are now renowned throughout the Ribera.
