What to see and do in Castrillo de Duero

Castrillo de Duero
Village
Castrillo de Duero is the easternmost municipality in the province of Valladolid, on the border with Segovia, on a slope falling towards the Botijas stream, on the páramo of Pico Cuchillejo, the highest point in the province at 932 metres. It has 108 inhabitants, compared to 505 in the mid-19th century. It preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, with a Romanesque 12th-century chancel and the rest of the building from the 17th, which holds a main altarpiece by Roque Muñoz and funerary slabs of the old local nobility. Among its urban architecture stand out several blazoned manor houses of the 17th and 18th centuries, such as the Casa Palacio de los Puerto Maeda, from 1772. In early August it celebrates the traditional harvest day, with typical costumes and re-enactment of field work.
Church of la Asunción de Castrillo de Duero
Monument
Built in the second half of the 12th century, it preserves from that period the Romanesque chancel — rectangular on the outside and semicircular within, with two windows — while the rest of the church belongs to the Baroque, with three naves divided by pillars and round arches and a transept topped with a dome and lantern. The main altarpiece, in Rococo style, was the work of the sculptor Roque Muñoz between 1602 and 1605; it was removed from its original position after a restoration that uncovered fresco paintings on the high altar, and its central niche today holds an image of the Assumption of the Virgin from the late 18th century. It holds six other altarpieces and was declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1998.

Historical milestone
In this village of the riverbank was born the guerrilla fighter who harassed the Napoleonic troops throughout Castile. He died in 1825, after being tried and executed during the absolutist reaction that followed the Trienio Liberal.
