Gumiel de Mercado
Village
Gumiel de Mercado is a town of 376 inhabitants in the Ribera del Duero comarca, in the province of Burgos, the seat, until the 12th century, of a large concejo (council district) that also included Sotillo de la Ribera and La Aguilera. It was the dowry of Diego López de Haro on his marriage to Violante, daughter of Alfonso X, and later passed to the Avellanedas and to the lordship of the Sandoval y Rojas family, dukes of Lerma, whose arms — the black band and the five blue stars of the lineage — are still preserved on the town's coat of arms. Its arcaded Plaza Mayor is closed off by two gates of the old town wall, Carrasotillo and Carramonzón, and is presided over by the town hall next to the church of San Pedro, from the 16th century, with an albarrana tower. On top of the hill lie the ruins of a castle, under whose protection numerous wine cellars were dug.
