Santibáñez de Esgueva
Village
Santibáñez de Esgueva is a municipality of 72 inhabitants in the Ribera del Duero comarca (Burgos), in the valley of the Esgueva river. Its surname of Esgueva distinguishes it from the numerous Castilian Santibáñez towns and confirms an antiquity reaching back to the 10th century, when the foramontanos occupied this basin, then free of Arab rule; despite this, the town is not documented until 1190, in a parchment from the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos recording a donation by King Alfonso VIII. Later it fell under the rule of the López de Haro family, lords of Biscay, to whom its residents paid rents in wheat, bacon and hens. It celebrates Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes on 22 September.
